Sony Corporation announced this week it would lay off 16,000 employees by 2010, but the impact of those job losses on Terre Haute’s Sony facility are still unknown. The Terre Haute plant manufactures Sony’s Blu-ray high definition digital video discs. Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett says he hasn’t heard how the job cuts at Sony will affect the Terre Haute plant.
“We’re hopeful it won’t affect us here. But my guess, overall, is that with the way the whole economic picture is, there’s going to be additional layoffs in lots of places. I wouldn’t be surprised [if Sony's layoffs reached Terre Haute], but I’m very hopeful and confident that what they’re doing is the leading-edge stuff. They’re growing, they’re expanding up there. Even if it’s a temporary thing, I would see it as something that’s based on economics ,and that [the jobs] would come back, seeing as the product is good,” Bennett said.
Last summer, Sony announced a $110 million expansion of the Blu-ray Disc line at the Terre Haute plant. That added 85 new jobs to the plant’s workforce of more than 1,200. Bennett made his comments on WFIU’s “Ask the Mayor” program.
