More than two dozen sailors from around the country are converging on Lake Lemon for an annual competition. The Force 5 North American Championship is a four-day sailing competition, held at a different location each year. This is the first time Lake Lemon has played host.
Sailor Kate Gladieux is used to training on Lake Erie and says she is surprised by how similar the conditions are here.
“I grew up sailing on Lake Erie, so it’s very different from a small inland lake, but I think that so far what I’ve seen of the wind this weekend – it’s just been really consistently breezy,” Gladieux says.
The sailors are competing for a trophy and bragging rights. Whoever wins the most races takes home the prize. Bloomington native Doug Kinzer won one of the races Friday morning.
“It’s athletic, it’s intellectual. You have to be smart and fit to be able to do it well. You’re in the outdoors – beautiful day like today – enjoying that out on the lake, and that’s kind of why I enjoy it. And I’ve done it all my life, so I’m kind of hooked,” Kinzer says.
The championship will be announced Sunday afternoon.
