Election officials in Monroe County says it is likely almost half the votes in this year’s general election were cast before the polls opened on Election Day.
Monroe County Clerk Linda Robbins says about 1,800 early voting ballots were cast this year, and 2,000 more are expected before the polls close tonight. Though Robbins says voting has been going smoothly, results could be slow in coming due to a lack of technology.
“This year we don’t have anything to scan and tally the votes, and so we are hand counting the votes,” she says. “So tonight we have a crew of people we’re training.”
Robbins says the county terminated its contract with its voting machine vendor and likely won’t enter into another deal until the county decides whether it’ll adopt vote centers for the 2012 elections.
