Monroe County School officials say they are considering changes to the district’s calendar. Richland, Bean-Blossom and Columbus have been looking into the possibility of a year round calendar – now Monroe County can be added to that list.
Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Personnel Peggy Chambers says the district will work with parents and teachers to develop a new calendar that makes sense.
“We’ll be able to address the concerns that parents might have and really have something that’s not only educationally sound for our students but also will provide support for families as they make arrangements for childcare or other summer activities and vacations,” she says.
Chambers says she has seen a variety of so-called “balanced calendars.” In some cases they include a week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks off for winter break and two or three weeks for a spring break.
At this point, Chambers says the district is just beginning the conversation about an alternative schedule, and there is no timeline for when the changes would go into effect.
