Using the Monroe County Drug Card now not only saves the public money but the county as well. For every uninsured prescription filled with the drug card, Monroe County will be reimbursed one dollar. Assessor Judy Sharp says the deal should put about 60,000 dollars a year back into county coffers.
“For Monroe County citizens it’s a win-win situation,” Sharp says. “And I don’t know what we’ll spend that little bit of money on but that little bit of money will add up and the more drugs that we buy the more money that comes into the general fund.”
The new program is being offered by the National Association of County Officials, an organization that lobbies for member counties across the country. Those using the drug card will save 24 percent on average when filling prescritptions at Monroe County pharmacies.
Anyone buying pharmaceuticals is eligible to use the card, as long as the medications are purchased in Monroe County. Drug cards can be picked up in county offices or any pharmacy in Monroe County.
