Nonprofit groups and businesses around Indiana are hosting volunteer opportunities in honor of Martin Luther King Day Monday.

Assistant manager at Indy Reads Books Sophie Faught encourages people to get out and volunteer on Martin Luther King Day. She hopes many volunteers will show up at Indy Reads Books, a nonprofit used bookstore that supports adult literacy.

“Ultimately, we are supporting literacy, which is something that each and every community member can benefit from,”Faught said. “So Martin Luther King Day is a day for a slightly different population to get to see what Indy Reads is all about, and have a good time doing something to support adult literacy.”

Faught invites volunteers to fill out a form on their website if they are interested in participating in the volunteer efforts, which will include organizing books and sprucing up the shop.

WonderLab Museum of Science in Bloomington is using the day to encourage kids to change the world with science.

“Our Martin Luther King program is one of our real life science series,” said Staci Radford-Vincent, Program Outreach Coordinator for WonderLab. “Which is a program that introduces scientists to the public and allows them to interact, learn about current science, and see what scientists do.”

The program will feature hands-on projects and visits from six real scientists, who will discuss their lives in the science world.

“All of these stations will be hands on, so it’s an opportunity for kids to work with tools of science that they wouldn’t normally get to use until they get older, and so we’ll have microscopes, petri dishes, and things like that, so they will get to actually do some of the things that scientists do in their labs,” says Radford-Vincent.

Wonderlab has been celebrating Martin Luther King Day with educational programs for about 5 years. The festivities run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and the program is free with the price of admission.
