The president of the Monroe County board of commissioners will officially announce this afternoon his intention to run for the senate seat being vacated by Vi Simpson. Mark Stoops will make his announcement at 4-30 in front of the Monroe County Government Center.
Vi Simpson, the seven term senator from Ellettsville is not running for another term so she can pursue a run for the lieutenant governor’s seat.
Another name that’s been tossed around as a possible replacement for Simpson is Peggy Welch. The state representative says she’s trying to be “prudent” about the soon-to-be-vacant seat in the Senate, but says she hasn’t made any decisions on whether to run.
A local Democratic Caucus will be held to choose who will replace Simpson on the ballot. That person will face Republican Reid Dallas in November.
