Bloomington’s Local Growers Guild is working to create a website where local growers can sell their products to local restaurants and residents. Over coffee and pastries residents worked out the details from a community discussion breakfast Fridy morning where members discussed the plans.
Guild manager Megan Hutchinson says the idea came from other cities that are already using food hubs.
“A buyer would go online and you could search the product that you want and add it to your cart,” Hutchinson says.
To make the project work, Hutchison says the grower’s guild would need volunteers to maintain the program and the website. Bloomington Resident Thomas Mooradian says he thinks a food hub could be successful because of the high demand for local food in Monroe County.
“So the environmental impact of some of the fertilizers and pesticides that some of the big Ag corporations are advocating are types of things I’d prefer to avoid so it’s a hot topic in a number of ways for me,” Mooradian says.
Hutchison says the guild hopes to get the program up and running later this summer.
