The Rebulican leadership’s press conference follows a meeting Monday of a legislative committee chaired by Noblesville Senator Luke Kenley, charged with gathering information about how the current property tax system is working. State Representative Peggy Welch, who serves on the committee, says despite public demonstrations of outrage over property tax hikes in Marion County, testimony her committee heard yesterday from county assessors suggested lawmakers should proceed slowly, and not institute major changes.
Governor Mitch Daniels said recently that the blame for increases in property tax bills lies partly with local governments, some of whom, he says, are simply expanding budgets too rapidly. Welch says while that problem isn’t universal across the state, there have been those who say the state should look at revamping the way local governments set up their budgets. The commission next meets at the Statehouse August 13.
