Otis Bowen served as Indiana's governor from 1973 to 1981.

Former governors Joe Kernan, Evan Bayh and Edgar Whitcomb were among those in attendance at a memorial service for Governor Bowen, who passed away earlier this month.

Governor Mike Pence praised Bowen’s service as Indiana Speaker of the House and governor and as federal Health and Human Services Secretary and says Bowen’s contributions are “incalculable.”

“God bless you, Doc,” Pence said. “Your caring work as a physician, your service and your leadership left Indiana and our nation better for you having been here.”

Those who spoke at the memorial also included House Speaker Brian Bosma, whose father served with the late former governor in the General Assembly, and former Indiana Secretary of State Ed Simcox, who was elected to the post during Bowen’s administration.
