Mayor Goodnight says the money will be part of a larger parks renovation project.

The City of Kokomo will receive a $35,000 gift, courtesy of soft drink manufacturer Sprite, to renovate its Studebaker Park basketball courts. An online poll on Facebook and the soft drink maker’s website led to the award.

Kokomo Parks Superintendent John Martino says the project will entail a complete makeover of the current basketball facility, including a new blue and green color scheme, and new team and spectator benches. A new shelter and restroom facility will be installed next to the court, along with murals done by a local artist.

“We’re proud of our park system, and Studebaker Park is one of 31 parks that we have in this community,” Martino said. “The community itself is very excited that we received this grant and also very excited that we will have an opportunity to completely transform the current basketball court and make them into something really special.”

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight says the new found cash may enable the city to shift funding to other parks projects in the future.

“We were looking at making improvements to Studebaker Park over the next couple of years,” he said. “I don’t know if they would have been as extensive as the investment we are going to make now with the grant. But, it does give us an opportunity to free up a little bit of money to shift to other projects throughout the city…We’re on track in the next couple of years of really changing our park system and reinvesting and it has paid off.”

Kokomo received the most votes in the Midwestern district of the Sprite program, making Studebaker Park one of seven facilities nationwide to receive the $35,000 grant.
