The 12 mile section of rail between Kokomo and Tipton hasn't been used since 1997.
The City of Kokomo announced a rail project aimed to help regional employers. Mayor Greg Goodnight says the city teamed up with Kokomo Grain and U.S. Rail to open a stretch of rail lines between Kokomo and Tipton.
Goodnight says the 12-mile stretch will help reduce transportation costs for regional employers and will likely lead to further economic development.
“This will activate that line, it‘s not been used since 1997 and this will actually help reduce costs for some of our regional employers, in fact nine of them that employ over 1,000 people in the area and hopefully set us up for future economic development,” Goodnight says.
He says work will begin fairly soon and be done by 2014.
