Governor Daniels announces Carmel senior Youkow Homma as Mr. Math for 2012.

A Kokomo student has been named the state‘s top science student. And a senior at a Carmel high school has been named the top math student.

Governor Daniels created the “Mr. Science” and “Mr. Math” awards in 2008 to give some balance to the annual Mr. Basketball, and to try to entice more students to take an interest in those fields.

“Obviously there‘s a lot of other things going on too,” Daniels says. “I‘m hardly the only person with a passion for this subject. But there does seem to be an uptick in the number of students seriously studying, participating in things like science fair.”

Northwestern High School‘s Tyler Barnes is Mr. Science, and pulled off an unprecedented double: he also won the state science fair, with a project on how to deal with acid-contaminated runoff from coal mines. Barnes will be a Wells Scholar at Indiana University in the fall, studying biochemistry.

Carmel senior Youkow Homma will take his Mr. Math award to Yale to study math and physics.  He says he’s been interested in the fields for some time.

“I think it mainly started in middle school with the ‘Math Counts‘ program, and just working through a lot of problem-solving strategies, and it just kind of took off from there — working with numbers, working not just strictly with numbers but also problem solving and understanding how numbers behave,” Homma says.

The awards carry a two-thousand-dollar scholarship.
