Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan has named John Whikehart the Deputy Mayor of Bloomington.
Whikehart just recently announced his retirement from the Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington where he has served as chancellor since 2001. Prior to becoming the head of the Bloomington campus, Whikehart served as the executive director for administration at the school’s location in Kokomo. Whikehart’s most recent experience in government was as the director of staff for Frank O’Bannon in the 80′s.
Whikehart wrote in a statement that he is excited for this new opportunity in Bloomington.
“This is an incredible offer to make a continued contribution to the city that is our home and which my family loves,” Whikehart said. “I am very grateful to Mayor Kruzan for this opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working in a new way with the many people in his administration whom I have come to know through our collaborations throughout the years.”
Mayor Mark Kruzan says he has known Whikehart since 1988 and has always been impressed by him.
“This is just a good guy, and I mean that in every sense of the word,” Kruzan says, “You know [he has] a great sense of humor about himself, about not taking things too seriously, but taking what he does very seriously. And I couldn’t ask for a better partner in government.”
Whikehart will replace former Deputy Mayor Maria Heslin. He is scheduled to take office January 16.
