Update 5:05 p.m.
Cpt. Bill Abston says all buildings have been checked, but they are still waiting for the signal that all is clear, WFYI’s Sam Klemet reports on his Twitter account.
IUPUI is on lockdown after reports of a man with a gun on campus.
At 12:30pm, someone spotted a man get out of a car in Lot 59 at IUPUI, the lot to the southwest of the Vermont Barnhill intersection, according to IUPUI.
The man was reportedly carrying a “long gun”. Guns are banned on all IU campuses.
“We encourage everyone to please stay where you are, if inside, or seek safe shelter, if outside,” IUPUI tweeted from its account after the lockdown was announced.
Police are actively investigating the report. IUPUI says all buildings must be actively searched before the campus can be cleared.
“With a campus like this, you really can’t secure it and prevent people from coming and going because you have so many streets, so many people, so many buildings,” IUPUI Capt. Bill Abston says. “So that’s why we put in our alert for people to seek shelter, and then they can take it upon themselves to do that.”
Classes are in session.
