IU To Implement New Alert System Next Week

The April Virginia Tech shootings brought to the forefront an initiative to provide the IU campus with an emergency alert system.

Indiana University officials have settled on a software vendor to help provide the university community with a multi-platform emergency alert system. IU will subscribe to the Connect-ED service provided by NTI Group as part of the broader “IU Notify” program.

IU Vice President for Information Technology Brad Wheeler says that initiative has been several years in the making, but was pushed to the forefront in April by the Virginia Tech shootings. Wheeler says members of the IU community will be called upon to submit various contact information through a sign-up system in the university’s OneStart online portal.

Wheeler says when OneStart 2 is rolled out next week, the new emergency alert system will already be built-in. He expects the system will be entirely tested and implemented by the end of 2007.
