Political science major, Patrick Lockhart, 20, is challenging House Representative Bob Behning, R-91, in his run for re-election next year.
Lockhart says he became frustrated with his state rep after he tried repeatedly to get in touch with him. Lockhart wanted to talk to Bob Behning about student debt, but says the representative was never available.
Lockhart, who will be running as a Democrat in the 91st district says if elected, he would take a bi-partisan approach in order to represent the views of all voters.
“Politics are in a state of complete disrepair right now – both nationally and on a state level,” he says. “The decisions of today are creating a broken system that our generation’s going to inherit tomorrow.”
IU Political Science professor Margie Hershey says Lockhart’s success will be largely dependent on the national political climate, financial means and media coverage.
“Somebody who is college-educated, native to the district, has a great deal of interest and enthusiasm for solving public policy questions should be at advantage, no matter what his age is,” she says.
If he wins, Lockhart will be Indiana’s youngest state representative.
