Hoosier Hysteria Draws Capacity Crowd

The Indiana University Hoosiers kicked off their season Saturday with Hoosier Hysteria.

The preseason No. 1 ranked men’s basketball team kicked off their season Saturday night with their annual event Hoosier Hysteria. The Indiana University Hoosiers men’s team hit the floor after the women’s basketball team held their open practice.

As in past years, the event involved a dunk contest, three-point contest and a scrimmage. A newer tradition started last year when junior guard Victor Oladipo stepped on the court singing with his own set of background dancers. All of the players contributed this year.

Between sophomore Cody Zeller clenching the 3-point contest, a dance routine, and Victor Oladipo flying over a two women’s basketball players for a dunk, the night was full of highlights that brought fans to their feet.

“The camaraderie of teams, the girls and the boys, just speaks volumes about what’s going to happen here in Bloomington,” Indianapolis resident Ed Smith said while watching the event.

Despite all of the entertainment, many people were more excited to see freshman Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Peter Jurkin take the floor in cream and crimson for the first time.

“We were trying to get to know them already,” Louisville resident Cindy Lawrence says. “They’ve got some great potential.”

Jurkin and Ferrell collaborated during the dunk contest when Ferrell would lob the ball up to the shot clock on top of the goal and Jurkin would throw the ball down for a monster dunk.  Ferrell was also a stand out during the scrimmage displaying his ability to dish the ball at the point.

The night ended with a scrimmage and fans got their first look at the 2012-2013 basketball squad playing together. The first ever sold out Hoosier Hysteria ended with a lot of smiles for both fans and the teams. Indiana’s first test of the season is scheduled against Indiana Wesleyan University, who they will at play Assembly Hall on November 1.
