Indiana is in the top five among states for the highest levels of mercury pollution.
The study from group Environment America used data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which found more than 134,000 lbs of mercury were emitted from power plants across the country.
The total mercury pollution produced in Indiana during 2009 totaled 6,046 lbs.
NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in northern Jasper County was 62nd on the list for emitting the heavy metal.
