Indiana Federal Workers Part of Government Pay Freeze

President Obama’s decision to freeze salary increases for all civilian federal employees could affect as many as five to six thousand Hoosiers.

Employees from a range of federal agencies including The United States Post Office, The US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Crane Navel Base may be affected by the decision.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer officially announced the freeze at a press briefing this morning (Monday).   According to a transcript of the meeting, the move is intended as a first step towards lowering the federal deficit.  Pfeiffer also indicated that it would cover all civilian employees… but would not affect military personnel currently serving in uniform.

Arnold Scott represents the 6th District office of the American Federation of Government Employees… which includes federal workers from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.  He says the President’s decision is little more than political gamesmanship.

“They need to eat, they need be able to make their house payments, they need to be able to do all the things that everybody needs to do.” says Scott.

White House spokesperson Dan Pfeiffer notes the move is an extension of similar pay freezes imposed on senior White House officials when the President took office in 2008.

It is still unclear what impact the move is likely to have on Indiana…   as media inquiries to area federal and legislative offices have thus far yielded no comment.

With millions of Americans out of work, it makes sense to try and husband resources to employ some of our fellow citizens. FDR cut wages of federal workers. What President Obama is proposing is merely to freeze salaries at current levels. Other than insurance, particularly health, many costs have gone down since the recession began in 2007. Gas and food particularly seem less than what they have sometimes been in the past. Until inflation comes back, wages probably should stay stagnant.
