The Indiana Department of Labor has launched a statewide safety initiative in an effort to make the roads safer.

Transportation incidents are the leading cause of Indiana workplace fatalities, according to the department.

“In 2011, there were 61 transportation-related deaths in Indiana, of those more than 40 Hoosier workers were killed in incidents that occurred on the side of roadways,” Department of Labor spokeswoman Chetrice Mosley says. “More specifically, three Hoosier workers were killed with roadway construction.”

Mosley says construction is getting underway in the state, and they want to caution employees to be 100 percent alert. Motorists are also being reminded to be aware of their surroundings, slow down and avoid distractions.
