Increased IU Enrollment Demands More Off Campus Housing

With a large number of students needing housing at Indiana University every year, new student housing projects are popping up all over Bloomington.

Patterson Pointe demolished some of the vacant buildings that were on the lot. They now plan to build three new buildings in their place.

A new student housing project is being built near New Tech High School–across from Patterson Pointe senior housing and just southwest of downtown Bloomington. Despite being more than two miles off campus, City Councilman Steve Volan says the Patterson Park complex will be 60 percent undergraduate students.

“As long as there is some kind of transit service available, people are going to use it and they’re going to flock to it,” he says.

Volan says there are two major bus lines that stop nearby. Patterson Park also plans to have a campus shuttle.

Some Bloomington residents have complained the cost of living in Bloomington is too high because of student housing. But Volan says the new complexes should lower the cost of living by alleviating housing demands.

Indiana University Residential Programs and Services Executive Director Patrick Connor says Bloomington needs to build more student housing units because of IU’s increasing enrollment.

“Part of the growth in the off-campus market is just there is, there are more students here in this community than there were a decade ago,” Connor says.

IU enrollment was 42,000 this academic year, compared to 39,000 seven years ago. Patterson Park is scheduled to be completed in August 2014.
