Drivers on the northern portion of Interstate 69 that runs from Indianapolis to Michigan will need to adjust to new exit numbers.
Starting in a few weeks, the Indiana Department of Transportation will add ‘200’ to the old numbers. Exit 5 will become 205, exit 10 will be 210, and so on.
INDOT spokesperson Nathan Riggs says the new signage will show both the old and new numbers for at least three years. He says the change is in preparation for opening the southern portion of I-69 from Evansville to Crane later this year.
“Currently, the southernmost terminus of I69 is there at 465, at mile marker zero,” he says. When we open the new segment farther down south; that will no longer be the southernmost terminus.”
Riggs says INDOT will hold public meetings so residents and business owners can ask questions about the exits. He says local emergency services will have to update their computers to reflect the changes .
