Cleanup at Indiana University’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation building is going to take longer than originally thought following a fire in early July. Officials at the IU architect’s office say the Wildermuth Center will not open until mid to late summer of 2012. Earlier they’d said the facility would likely reopen this spring.
Officials say a significant amount of work still needs to be done including lighting replacement, removal and replacement of 5 of the 10 basketball courts, sanding and refinishing of the other 5 courts and potential removal and replacement of the track.
The offices, activity spaces and locker rooms that are currently open should remain open during the renovation. Most of the cost is being covered by insurance.
A construction crew working on the roof of the HPER ignited the fire July 5th.
