The Indiana High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has approved a new rule allowing home school students to become eligible to play for IHSAA member school sports team.
The rule states that a home school student who meets certain criteria can become a candidate to join a team at the public school in their district.
IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox says the criteria speaks to academic performance, passing required physicals and attending one class in the school building during the day.
The students must also have been home schooled for the previous three consecutive years to be eligible.
“That is a safeguard to ensure that we’re speaking directly to the home school student who is a home school student who wishes to take advantage of an opportunity,” Cox says.
Cox says the criteria are meant to put the home schooled students on a level playing field with traditional students. The new rule will go into effect this fall.
