Last year, Black Friday shoppers got a start on holiday shopping at Best Buy.

The holiday hiring season’s latest figures show retailers are hiring an additional 780,000 seasonal workers this year, which is up about 30 percent over last year.

Analysts say about 45 percent of those workers are students and the remainder are a mixture of retirees and experienced workers who are not yet retirement age.

Indiana Department of Workforce Development Spokesman Joe Frank says holiday retail sales boost businesses, help create jobs and raise sales tax revenue.

“When folks by things, they pay taxes on those items in sales tax, so retail sales, especially around the holiday time is kind of the bedrock of economic growth,” he says.
