Flags on city buildings in Lafayette are at half staff to mark the passing of a former mayor. Jim Riehle died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76. Riehle served as mayor from 1971 to 1995. He was widely regarded as a catalyst for improving areas of downtown Lafayette, and secured funding to move many of the city’s train tracks to a corridor along the Wabash River. Riehle is also credited with convincing others to enter politics, such as State Representative Sheila Klinker.
Riehle is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
