Fire crews were called to the five alarm fire at 2nd and Main street around 9:40 PM Saturday.

The state fire marshal is investigating the fire that devastated the landscape of downtown Vincennes. The blaze gutted the Gimbel corner building Saturday night.

Fire crews were called to the five alarm fire at 2nd and Main street around 9:40 PM Saturday. Crews immediately began to battle the fire calling in help from Vincennes Township, Bicknell, Princeton, Washington City and Lawrence-Allison Fire Departments.

Assistant Chief David Halter says they had to do what they could to control the fire from the outside since it wasn’t safe to go into the building due to some areas that had already collapsed.
