A gay teenager who was expelled after bringing a stun gun to school to protect himself from bullies has sued Indianapolis Public Schools.
17-year-old Darnell “Dynasty” Young and his mother, Chelsea Grimes, say they reported the harassment to officials at Arsenal Technical High School several times.
Their federal lawsuit claims administrators blamed Young for the bullying for being too flamboyant. The lawsuit filed in US District Court in Indianapolis Friday accuses IPS of violating Young‘s civil rights and also of violating his First Amendment right to free expression for trying to get him to dress differently at school.
Young was expelled for firing the stun gun into the air in April after he said six other students had threatened him.
IPS has not commented on the lawsuit, which also names the school board, Superintendent Eugene White, and the principal and assistant principal of Arsenal Tech.
