Excellence In Social Media: Election Coverage

The WFIU/WTIU news team partnered with other public media stations across the state to provide comprehensive coverage for election night.

The 2016 general election was particularly important in Indiana, particularly because former governor Mike Pence was the Vice Presidential nominee on the GOP ticket. The state also had key positions up for election: Governor, Attorney General, Superintendent of Public Instruction, a U.S. Senate seat, and all nine U.S. House seats.

With more than a dozen reporters in the field late into the evening, the team of reporters back at the office paid particular attention to social media updates. Reporters provided live updates on Twitter from various watch parties, and some provided up-to-the-minute results for local races that were not posted online. The updates were consistently disseminated through station accounts.

Social media assets such as winner declaration cards were prepared well ahead of time, meaning winner announcements were Tweeted out within seconds of a race being called.

The following Tweets represent a sampling of updates provided from both reporter and station accounts on election night, November 8 2016.
