On each President’s Day break during his two terms in Congress, Brad Ellsworth has toured each county in his district on a listening tour. Wednesday at a stop in Spencer in Owen County, Ellsworth met a tough crowd.
One attendee urged him to run for Senate so he wouldn’t be the eighth district’s representative any longer. Ellsworth said he’d take that into consideration but said there are others who are rumored to be interested.
“I heard [legendary rock star] John Mellencamp the other day as a possible candidate,” Ellsworth said, appearing to be joking.
Ellsworth says he still needs to speak with his family about the decision. He says he has been contacted by the state Democratic Party. And he says the clock is ticking.
“This is one where they want to see a decision rather quickly. And so I think in the next 24 or 48 hours I could make that call and be comfortable with that,” Ellsworth said. “Again, with something that big, you don’t want to jump off the cliff that quickly. It takes some thought. I will do that over the next couple days and decide.”
Other Democrats rumored to be in the mix: State Senator Vi Simpson and Ninth District Rep. Baron Hill.
