Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly is a longtime critic of outsourcing jobs to foreign countries.

An Indiana senator and longtime critic of outsourcing jobs to foreign countries says he’s selling his stock in his brother’s arts and crafts company after The Associated Press reported it manufactures some products in Mexico.

Democrat Joe Donnelly said in a campaign news release Friday that he made the statement to reporters at the Indiana Black Expo luncheon. Donnelly said he hasn’t had an active role in the company for 20 years but was taking the action to avoid allowing the issue to become a “distraction from our work to end outsourcing.”

The Indiana senator is one of the nation’s most vulnerable Democratic senators up for re-election next year.

The AP reported Thursday that Donnelly made at least $15,000 in dividends last year on $50,000 of stock in Stewart Superior, which used Mexican workers to produce ink. He criticized Carrier Corp. for moving jobs to Mexico last year.

National Republicans are calling on Donnelly to donate the profits from selling his stock. The National Republican Senatorial Committee says Donnelly has been “hypocritically profiting” from the company’s actions.

How ironic! The typically heartless Republican consorts of the Class of Wealth hypocritically demand concessions from Donnelly, while in the same breath protecting their patrons from paying their fair share of taxes?
How much this reminds me of Leona Helmsley, “Taxes are for little people.” That should be the compulsory official motto of the Republican Party.

But then Donnelley himself wants to close the barn door after the horse is gone. You hollow act of contrition won’t hide your guilt, Senator.

I think this whole made in a America “debate” is a joke. We live in a global economy. The only reason Donnelly is being forced to stop supporting a family business because the INK they use is made in Mexico? What if it were made in Taiwan, Australia or Brazil? Does it really matter? Can’t we be happy that the Senators family still operates the company in Indiana? I don’t know the size of the company but it’s giving some Hoosiers jobs. I think we are kididng ourselves if believe every business venture a politician is affiliated with would have every parse and parcel made in America. Until naysayers of Senator Donnelly unveils an inventory of every home appliance, mobile phone or piece of furniture they own is audited, this story is just another partisan smokescreen.
