Rick Dietz says his top priority will be getting the county's budget in check.

A caucus of Monroe County Democrats appointed Dietz to the Monroe County Council on Sunday. He will fill the seat vacated by District 4 member Sam Allison, who announced his resignation on last month. Dietz is chairman of the Monroe County Democrats and is the director of Bloomington’s IT department.

Monroe County Council member Rick Dietz says the budget will be his top priority as he assumes his new position. He says the county will need to make cuts because it is faced with a $3 million deficit.

“We need to keep in mind the services that all the people of Monroe county depend on and deserve,” Dietz says. “And the treatment of county staff, I want to make sure as we are talking about reduction, that it is humane and it’s a process that is sensitive to the needs of everyone.”

Dietz term will run through 2014 when the seat will be up for election.
