Lt. Governor Becky Skillman will not run for Indiana governor. Skillman cites "minor health concerns" as the reason for her decision.

Governor Daniels says his lieutenant governor was planning to run for governor in two years, until an undisclosed health problem took her out of the race. Becky Skillman has been officially undecided on running for governor until Monday’s announcement that she wouldn’t.  But Daniels confirms she was planning to run and he was surprised when she told him she would not run.

“But then I didn’t know that she had encountered minor, and it is minor, but it’s not trivial health news so in that way I think she was a little surprised too,” Daniels said.

Daniels says Skillman would have made a superb governor..  He says ultimately it would have been up to the voters, but no governor has ever had a better partner than Skillman.

“It’s an appealing notion to me that she might.  She would have been a great governor,”  said Daniels.  ” She’s ready in every way.”

Daniels call the former state senator a central figure in every piece of his administration’s agenda, especially in his first year as governor, when the statehouse was unfamiliar territory.  He says Skillman guided him and his initiatives through the personalities and procedures of the general assembly, and continues to do so.  Daniels says Republicans have other qualified candidates, including sixth district congressman Mike Pence, who has been weighing whether to run for governor or President.  Daniels is barred from seeking a third consecutive term.
