The man who stepped down and allowed Evan Bayh to enter the US Senate will take his successor’s place. A number of polling sources now project Dan Coats will defeat former 8th District Congressman Brad Ellsworth to become the state’s junior senator.
Coats served in the Senate from 1989 to 1999 after taking over for Dan Quayle when Quayle became Vice President. The man with whom Coats served in the Senate then is the same person he’ll serve with starting next year, Richard Lugar. The loss marks one of the ten pickups Republicans would need to retake control of the Senate.
