Cummins unveiled several new engine technologies this week, including a fully-electric semi.

It’s just a concept at this point, but the lighter battery design allows it to hold a charge longer. And Cummins says the same technology is already going to market in other vehicles.

“We actually are going to see Cummins electrify powertrain in buses before we see it in this type of vehicle,” says Director of On-Highway Marketing Communications Mario Sanchez-Lara. “Maybe in the next couple of years.”

The electric engine technology is designed for traveling short distances within town, which makes it ideal for buses. Cummins also plans to unveil a “revolutionary” heavy-duty diesel engine in 2022.
