County Council members have completed the last legislative step needed for convention center officials to acquire the approximately 4 acres of land to the east and south of the convention center. Council members passed an ordinance Tuesday pledging the convention center’s portion of the county’s Inn Keep’s tax to purchase the land. Convention Center Director Talisha Coppock said officials have already begun the steps needed to close on the purchases.
“Actually, I think it’s going to be about mid November,” Coppock said. “There’s a notice to advertise the lease that was just approved by the county commissioners and the building corporation and that’s a 30-day notice and so that puts it until about November 13.”
Coppock said she hopes to start making plans for the new property’s use as early as this spring. Council members also approved a one-and-a-half-million-dollar personal property tax abatement for Tasus Corporation during their meeting Tuesday. Tasus Corporation is a car part manufacturer. Tasus officials plan to purchase a new injection molding machine that they say will help them stay competitive and could possibly lead to more business and therefore new jobs.
