Cook Group has announced it will fund the renovations for the Tivoli Theatre in Spencer.
After a fire in 1995, the theater tried to recover but was finally closed just four years later and has not been opened since. Owen County Preservation has been working to fund its restoration since it purchased the property in 2005.
Owen County Preservation President Deb Jordan says one of its goals has been to maintain the building’s original features.
“We’re just so excited. We’re just elated with the fact that this is going to help our downtown renovate itself,” she says. “We just think it will be a key element in bringing people back to downtown Spencer.”
George Ridgeway, chief architect for Cook Group says the entire project will take about 12 months to complete.
“We’ll have to put a new roof on it, insulate the facility. We’re going to put in a fire protection sprinkler system. It will have to have new heating and air conditioning. The electrical will have to be replaced,” he says. “There’s a lot of interior clean up that will be done.”
The theater first opened in 1928. It will be restored to a movie theater and could also include a restaurant or community meeting hall.
