Columbus construction crews preparing Central Middle School’s gymnasium for demolition unearthed a time capsule buried nearly 85 years ago. The capsule was buried on November 10, 1922, the day construction began on the current school. Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation superintendent John Quick says the copper box had stayed water-tight and helped preserve the capsule’s contents, including three different newspapers and a telephone directory with three-digit numbers, among other items.
Central’s current building is slated for demolition this month, while the new building will be dedicated in August. Quick says another time capsule will be buried at that dedication. He says everything found in the time capsule will be put on display. Quick says as demolition continues, he expects to find more artifacts.
