You may have to find an alternate route if your morning commute requires you to drive through Bloomington’s Westside. A major section of West Third Street is closed as construction on the road nears completion.
The road will be closed between State Road 37 and Landmark Avenue while construction crews work to replace the crossing at Benham Lane and South Muller Parkway. Project Engineer Joyce Williams said workers are also adding safety features including moveable arms that will block traffic as trains pass.
“Railroads are constructed with a solid line of track across a road crossing. If you were to have a joint somewhere in the road crossing it would be more likely to get out of alignment,” said Williams. Having seen that other derailment recently, we certainly don’t want anything like that. That’s why we have to do a road closure, so they can build that track in a solid piece.”
Local traffic can access roads on either side of the railroad crossing, but will not be able to cross over the tracks. Through traffic is detoured onto West Second Street via State Road 37 or Landmark Avenue.
Third Street is scheduled to open again on Monday, August 1st. The entire West Third Street construction project including wider lanes, medians, new traffic signals, bicycle lanes, and sidewalks is scheduled to end early this fall.
