Former long-time Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton had harsh words for the President and Congressional leaders of both parties over the debt ceiling debate.

Speaking in Indianapolis Friday, Hamilton called the debt ceiling debate “an absurdity.”  He said the U.S. is the only country in the world with a debt ceiling, and feels it should be eliminated entirely.

“Everybody thinks it’s a check on spending. It hasn’t been a check on spending at all,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton said both parties are to blame for letting the debate drag on for so long.

“It is a flat out failure of political leadership; this is an awful way to run a United States government,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton said even when a deal is reached, the damage has already been done because the debate diverted attention away from more serious economic issues like reducing spending, raising revenues and increasing government efficiency.
