On any clear days they can find, backhoes are working outside Community Kitchen of Monroe County’s new location.
The largest provider of free meals in Bloomington is on schedule to open its new facility in mid-to-late August. The expansion will accommodate twice as many patrons as Community Kitchen’s old facility.
Executive Director Vicki Pierce says patrons will feel more comfortable.
“I think this space, the nicest change for us,” she said, “will be an increase in dignity for our patrons. It’s not going to be a flashy space. It’s going to be very utilitarian but it will also be a lot softer and a lot more person oriented than the space we’re in now. Things like additional restroom space, carpeting on the floors and they’re not eating dinner next to a cooler that’s going on and off and making a lot of noise.”
Renovations will include a family dining room, aimed at recreating a more private atmosphere similar to a family style meal a family might have in its own home.
Without further donations Community Kitchen is facing a $325,000 debt on the new construction.
