Sheriff’s Department Investigates Church Break-in

The sheriff's office say burglars often steal musical instruments from churches, but it rarely catches the responsible party.

A church break-in reported earlier this week in Bartholomew County at the Messiah Baptist Church, still has the Sherriff’s office working on the case.

Captain Gregory Duke says the vandals damaged a window, the air conditioning unit and took a number of musical devices.

“Members are certainly saddened by it. It’s a difficult time for them to lose those musical instruments. It’s a big hit on a small church, which resources are always limited,” Duke says.

Duke says it is a theme the department is accustom to, but with little success on catching the responsible party.

“We’ve had instances where musical instruments have been stolen out of churches,” he says. “We almost never come up with anything on it in the way of leads.”

Duke says the problem is statewide. Anyone with information should contact the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.
