With one year under his belt, Indiana Basketball coach Tom Crean took his Tuesday evening to address the student body at the IU auditorium.
Coach Crean started the evening on a light note. “I put this new jacket on that was sitting in the office and my wife said you are going to speak with the students, you don’t have to dress like one and I said, you are beautiful but you don’t know fashion, this is cool!”
Crean has embraced many Indiana basketball traditions since his arrival last year, including the annual address at the IU auditorium, an event made popular by Bob Knight. Crean talked to the students who stuck through a losing season with a team that he says worked hard to represent IU the best they could.
“You gotta start over at one of the greatest programs in the country. There’s no book for that, you people helped write it. And I’m not being facetious or corny, you people helped write it. You helped write the manuscript for what this is going to look like some where down the line when this becomes one of the greatest stories that ever hit sports on the come back of Indiana University Basketball.”
Afterwards, students reacted on Crean’s talk. “He’s got a lot of fire, he’s a fighter – he talked about street fighting, that’s what we need here at IU.”
“He was awesome, I see what the athletic department saw in him when we picked him to be our coach and I’m excited about the year.”
“Crean’s a spirited man and it’s not all about basketball with him.”
