It’s been more than three months since REI Real Estate Services took over management of Bloomington’s three city-owned downtown parking garages. When the deal was first struck, Bloomington Deputy Mayor James McNamara said it wouldn’t be until October at the earliest that users of the garages would see any changes. While drivers entering the garages for short-term use may still not see any difference, McNamara says the transfer of billing operations to REI has affected people with long-term contracts.
McNamara says users of the garages will gradually notice improved cleanliness and structural maintenance at the facilities. After the new year, he says city officials and REI will reexamine the configuration of the spots to maximize utilization, and also open up the possibility of offering the first hour of parking free.
