Howard County has been receiving regular payments from Chrysler Group for property taxes that the company did not pay in 2009 and 2010. Treasurer Martha Lake says that Howard County schools had to take out loans from the state when they did not get their cut of that money.
“Actually this is money that would have been operation money in 2009 and 10. This would have been taxes that would have been due in 09 and 10. And so for the units that had to receive loans, and that was our schools. They will be reimbursing for the loans that they have had to borrow,” said Lake.
Lake says the missing Chrysler cash was one factor in the county running a deficit in 2009 and 2010. The 10-point-4 million dollar payment will also trickle down to county and city governments. Lake says Chrysler still has about four years left to pay the remaining five-point-one million dollars it owes.
