After threatening fines for nearly two weeks, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma announced them for all House Democrats that remain out of the Statehouse, beginning next Monday.

Starting Monday, any House Democrats without an excused absence will be fined $250 per day. Speaker Brian Bosma says he’s simply had enough:

“Honestly,” he says, “a little bit of this, I get it, it’s okay, it’s accepted. This has gotten to the point of absurdity now and we need people to return to perform the duties they were sworn to uphold.”

House Minority Leader Pat Bauer said Wednesday he felt like there had been progress towards a return. But after the announcement of fines, Bauer seemed less optimistic:

“All the conversations,” he says, “at least with the House Republicans, are blasted away by this hostile move.”

Bosma decided against officially repremanding the House Democrats Thursday, but said censure might be his next move if the Democrats don’t return Monday.
