U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner has postponed a bill that would limit the influence local metropolitan planning organizations or MPOs have on federal transportation projects.
Indiana’s U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon helped write the language of the bill. It would allow the governor of a state to override MPOs if federal transportation plans do not match the goals of city and county level groups.
The section relating to MPOs is part of H.R. 7, a larger highway bill that has become controversial because of the funds it dedicates to transportation programs.
The House plans to take the bill back up after next week’s President’s Day recess President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the legislation if it is passed.
