Bloomington, IU Police Polish Driving Skills

Driving training provides officers with crucial emergency pursuit skills. The training involves fast starts and stops, weaving and even driving backwards.

Police in the Bloomington area are taking part in a week-long exercise to hone their driving skills, which are often put to the test in emergency situations. Officers with the Indiana University Police, the Bloomington Police, and other law enforcement agencies, are conducting the emergency vehicle operations course on the west side of Memorial Stadium. Bloomington Detective Joe Qualters says the training provides officers with skills that are crucial in emergency pursuits. IUPD Captain Jerry Minger says the training involves fast starts and stops, weaving, and even driving backwards at high rates of speed.

The exercises will be conducted near Memorial Stadium from 6 a.m. until midnight through Thursday.
