Bloomington Cinemat Will Stay Open

Despite the Cinemat's screening room losing money for the business, owner Steve Volan says he believes the business is still viable.

Bloomington City Council member and Cinemat owner Steve Volan says he’s decided not to sell his downtown movie rental business. Volan had announced in July that he was looking for a buyer with the hopes of keeping the Cinemat’s 5,000-title collection intact. He says he’s now decided to hold on to the business because some recent changes in store operations convinced him that the business is still viable. He says the Cinemat’s screening room had been losing the business money.

Volan says the Cinemat’s screening room has been used mostly for live music over the past month, though he says he’s hoping to increase the diversity of events held there. He says the Cinemat’s Friday film series will likely be moved to Sunday afternoons or late nights so that the facility can host live entertainment events seven days a week.
